Kristen Verea
Hello :) my name is Kristen
(And that's my dog, Kiko). For me acupuncture is all the things- it’s fun to solve a puzzle and see pain disappear quickly! It’s also an honor to hold space for the slower healing processes, the body-mind trauma that needs a space of understanding and allowing for healing to unfold, layer by layer. I love my work, and I would be honored to work with you! Please visit me at Shen Medicine in Nashville. To go straight to booking- click here.

Shoulders, hips, hands, feet- any body pain

Cupping/ Guasha
Cupping and/or guasha are used when there is so much blood stagnation that we need to clear it out for the needles to be able to even work. Think about Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps with his cupping marks. A professional athlete will build certain muscles so much that the enlarged musculature prevents blood from flowing through smoothly. This is how muscles become sore. Guasha and cupping disperse the blood and bring it closer to the surface, so that it’s essentially thinned enough to move back into the blood stream to be properly metabolized by the body. Cupping and guasha accomplish the same result with different tools: to guasha we use a painless scraping motion, and to cup we use suction in order to thin and move the blood. With the physical substance out of the way, the needles can have a more direct effect on energetic pathways.

Moxibustion
Moxibustion (a.k.a. "moxa") is a therapy that I use often for cases of chronic illness or weakness in an organ or organ system. If a patient needs guasha/cupping for “too much,” for example, they may need moxa for “too little.” Moxibustion is commonly used for low immune system, chronic, dull low back pain, and pain from arthritis. Moxibustion involves the use of the mugwort herb- artemisia vulgaris- which is rolled into a cylinder similar to a cigar called moxa. Smokeless moxa is further turned into a charcoal before use. In either case, the moxa is lit and the hot end is placed over but without touching the acupuncture point. It sends warmth into the point and into the acupuncture channel. Often this infusion of warmth invigorates the channel, moving stagnation through and alleviating pain. Moxa burns at an Energy frequency similar to the human body’s, and therefore the body accepts moxa as an addition of Energy to the system. Depending on the nature of the acupuncture point, it may also send this Energy to an Organ that needs a little love- a little oomph to do its job better! I also instruct patients how to do this on their own to incorporate into their self-care routine.
